A Prayer for the Hallowing of God's Name
Mighty God, we pray in the Lord's Prayer, "Hallowed be thy name."
Indeed we do honor and glorify your name.
We treat your name as holy, as different from and separate from all other names.
We realize, 0 Lord, that your name is more than just a word, that it stands for your nature, your character, your personality.
Psalm 9:20 says, "They that know thy name will put their trust in thee; for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee."
Thus, we see, Lord, that to know your name is to know what you are like, and that those who know what you are like are eager to seek after you and trust you.
Again, Psalm 20:7, "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God."
In our time of trouble, we will not put our trust in human aids and defenses, but we will remember who you are, Lord, and call upon you with confidence.
Moreover, Lord, To honor your name is to give you the unique place in our lives that is demanded by your nature.
When we pray, "Hallowed by thy name," we pray that that we will have the spiritual wisdom to reverence you, 0 Lord, as you deserve to be reverenced.
To give you proper reverence, Lord, is to be constantly aware of your presence.
It is to know that we live in a God-filled world, and therefore we are called to live a God-filled life.
When we realize how you surround us and care for us and love us, our only desire is that you will fill and mold our lives.
Renew in us, 0 Lord, a determination to make real in our lives the phrase: "Hallowed by thy name."
In Jesus' name. Amen.
